Robert Glasper |In My Element [Blue Note, 2007] | Music Review]
As jazz pianist come and go in the last few decades, I’ve heard my fair share of talented players. In recent years, I’ve been blessed to hear this amazingly gifted young jazz pianist from Houston, TX. – Robert Glasper. Since graduating from college, he’s played with the talented Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove and Hip-Hop artist Mos Def. Subsequently, my next encounter was back in 2005 with his critically acclaimed Blue Note Records debut entitled “Canvas

After touring extensively and refining his skills as a player and composer, Glasper is back in a different approach, compositionally, with his second outing on Blue Note simply called “In My Element” [which by no means falls short of his previous accomplishments]. Nonetheless, it’s clear as day his transitive melodies are attractive in this trio setting, as Glasper’s improvisational skills communicate intensely within the framework you’d expect to hear from an artist of his caliber. He features an impressive group of musicians that consists of Vicente Archer on bass, & Damion Reid on drums. They’re camaraderie as players, by instinct compliments, all throughout, starting with “In My Element.”
As for the jazz enthusiast, are there any other music lover seeking to discover innovative, fresh, and challenging sounds? You might consider pianist Robert Glasper’s “In My Element.” This one would definitely be a great choice; You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the timbre of this recording! Many jazz artists and listeners alike would love the idea of “The freedom of expression,” that dwells in the spirit of the jazz community. However, Glasper’s perspective on this issue goes as follows … “but to lock in and let the groove seep in, that takes discipline.” He refers to the lack of restraint which a lot of jazz musicians suffer from [not necessarily bad], therefore discipline is one of his best assets as an artist.
After spinning his latest work of “In My Element,” the capable Glasper is indeed a master at articulating his compositions. He shapes them layer by layer with varied melodic complexities that are framed into an accessible soundscape that is essential in much of today’s urban culture. If you dig jazz that is creatively hip, then the poignant voice of composer/pianist Robert Glasper is clearly a great choice.
